Between 1979 and 1984, the Sicilian mafia smuggled nearly two billion dollars worth of heroin into the US as part of the criminal racket known as the Pizza Connection. Mobsters on both sides of the Atlantic reaped the wealth yet war ensued. Terror filled the streets of Sicily as rival bosses fought for control of the drug empire. The arrest of Sicilian godfather, Tommaso Buscetta marked a turning point in the war against La Cosa Nostra. Forced into hiding after coming out on the losing side in the Corleonesi-inspired war in Sicily, he broke omerta - the mafia's sacred code of silence. His testimony helped authorities identify the main players in the heroin trade. Between 1986 and 1987, two major trials were held - one in Palermo, Italy the other in New York. In the Palermo maxi-trial, several hundred Sicilian Mafiosi were convicted to long prison sentences. Never again would the Sicilian and the American mafias work so closely together.
